Urban transport technology: which electric vehicle is right for me?

Electric vehicle is any form of vehicle designed to carry people that is powered by an electric motor and rechargeable batteries. The most common electric vehicles are electric bicycles and electric scooters. There are many factors to determine if electric bicycle or electric scooter is better for you.

Several models are on the market, in different shapes and sizes, The key factors to consider when selecting your electric vehicle are range, rider weight, terrain, climbing capacity and quick acceleration.

Electric bikes and electric scooters can be both a good choice for point to point transportation. Electric scooters have greater range per charge, but in a bicycle you always have the option to pedal. Also in the electric bicycles you can easily unlock the battery pack and take it off for charging at home or office like a mobile phone in 2-3 hours.

Electric bicycles are much lighter and compact than scooters making them better urban vehicles than scooters, especially for short trip 10km (6miles). We hope after reading following tips, you will be able to choose the electric vehicles for your needs.

Electric scooters

Our electric scooter is one of the first high performance two wheel electric vehicle. It offers all the benefits of a traditional gasoline powered scooter for local transportation coupled with no noise, no emissions, low maintenance costs, and no gas station for refuelling.

It is very fun and easy to ride, the low center of gravity, the top speed of 45km/h - 28miles per hour (electronically limited to meet European standards) and fast acceleration provide excellent handling for urban trips making local errands fun, quick and easy.

Speaking frankly, it cannot take place of your gasoline scooter at 100%, because of its range. Riding Scooter means freedom, go anywhere whatever you want, and battery cannot offer enough range. A single charge will offer a range of approximately 60Km - 38miles under ideal conditions: flat land, no wind, 75Kg - 165pounds rider. Range varies a lot depending on hill climbing, rider weight, and terrain. Also hot or cold temperatures can reduce battery performance of about 20%.

Electric bicycles

An electric bicycle isn't a scooter, it is a normal bike fitted with an electric motor and batteries. The electric bike is a wonderful machine, a combination of both human and electric force, makes riding soft and effortless. Hills and headwinds are no problem anymore.

A bicycle is the classic transportation for kids of all ages, an electric bike exceeds the limitations of a normal bicycle in speed and range. Start using an electric bicycle, and enjoy a new way of transportation, fast and affordable. You don't need a drivers license, registration, or insurance.

Electric bicycles are very nice to ride and easy to use. Max speed is reached quickly and silent, while we do a wellness soft exercise. What kind of battery is the best for you
Before buying an electric bike or electric scooter you should decide what kind of battery is the best for you. You can find on the market 3 different kinds of batteries, Li-ion battery, Ni-mh battery, or lead acid battery, having different performances and costs. Ni-cad is now forbidden for recycling problems. All Algardi bikes have detachable batteries for easy charging. Algardi electric bikes range depends on a lot of factors: kind of battery, headwind, terrain, driving style, range varies from 30 to 60 km for single charge. The memory loss is associated with Ni-cad batteries, Algardi electric bike batteries don't have memory loss problem, we don't use Ni-cad batteries.
Lead acid battery
The most used battery for electric vehicles is still the lead acid battery, expecially when rapid current discharge is required.

Lithium-ion battery
The rechargeable lithium battery is the most advanced battery today. The greatest advantage of the lithium battery is its high energy density, it allows us to put on our bikes very small and light battery pack without reducing range per single charge. Price is high if compared to lead acid batteries, because of the complex production techniques and high raw material costs required to produce this battery.

Why we use only brushless motors on our bicycles

A brushless DC motor is an AC synchronous electric motor that at sight it is very similar to a DC motor. The difference is in the commutation system, electronically controlled in the brushless motor and mechanical commutation system in the conventional DC motor.

In a conventional DC motor, the brushes make mechanical contact with a set of electrical contacts on the rotor (commutator). As the armature rotates on axis, the stationary brushes come into contact with different sections of the rotating commutator. The commutator and brush system form a set of electrical switches, each firing in sequence, such that electrical power always flows through the armature coil closest to the stationary stator (permament magnet).

In a brushless DC motor, the brush system/commutator assembly is replaced by an intelligent electronic controller. The controller performs the same power distribution of a convetional DC motor, without using a brush system. The controller orchestrates the rapid changing current timings. The brushless DC motor offers several advantages over brushed DC motor, including higher reliability, reduced noise, longer lifetime (no brush erosion), and reduction of electromagnetic interference.

The brushless DC motors are considered more efficient than DC motors. This means for the same input power, a brushless DC motor will convert more electrical power into mechanical power than a brushed motor.
