Urban transport technology: the 21st century, the century of electric vehicles

Electric motors are high energy efficiency and offer great acceleration without transmission or clutch at any rpm range, having reasonable torque from zero rpm to 10.000 rpm. So electric cars have higher efficiency and lower total emissions than the most efficient gasoline cars.

Because gasoline cars are worldwide known as best performance cars, to be confident, the transition to an electric economy would take many decades, and replacing most of the cars on the road with green vehicles will take more than 50 years, even if electric cars will be cheaper than equivalent gasoline cars.

A 100km (60 mile) range is acceptable for a city car, it is unusual to drive more than 100Km (60 miles) in a day in a city. The only problem of electric car is the inability to take long trips, since there are no recharging stations on the way, and it takes 4-5 hours to charge batteries.

The electric vehicles mostly use lead acid batteries, but nickel metal hydride batteries or lithium ion batteries will be used in next future in order to get better performance and double range.

Hydrogen does not exist in nature, the most efficient way to produce hydrogen is by reforming natural gas (CH4) or water (H2O). the total efficiency of hydrogen produced from natural is about 55%, including all phase of production in new plants and the efficiency for a fuel cell is about 50%. The energy efficiency for the hydrogen fuel cell car is 30% not far from gasoline cars.

Someone suggested to produce hydrogen through electrolysis of water, but to tell you the truth, it is a very inefficient way to use electricity, the total efficiency of this process is the half of the efficiency if producing from natural gas.
