History notes electric bicycles and vehicle transportation
Electric vehicles appeared in the 1830s thanks to Joseph Henry who invented the first dc motor. Thomas Davenport built the first electric vehicle, in 1847 Moses Farmer produced a small electric car, but we have to wait till 1851 to see a real electric car with a speed of 20mph by Charles Page. A few years later Gaston Plante built a rechargable battery that allowed an electric car to speed at 66mph. The first trike, a three wheeled vehicle similar to the bicycle, also enjoyed a vogue in the 1880s. In 1897 the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company began to use electric powered cabs in New York City. In the early 1900s most of the cabs in New York were electric, and more than 50 manufacturing horse cab and wagon companies began to turn production into electric vehicles producing small electric cars and electric buses. There were more than 30.000 electric cars in the U.S. Electric cars were liked for their reliability, simply start, no vibration, no noise, and no gear changes. A lot of advantages over gasoline cars, but in 1912 when Charles Kettering built the electric starter for gasoline engine, people became to prefer gasoline cars for their long range.
The first hybrid car
In the early 1900s Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the famous car company, developed when 28 years old, the first hybrid car powered by hub electric motors (motors were placed in the wheels of the car), lead acid batteries and a petrol generator to charge the batteries. 100 years later this hybrid solution is advertised as new technology.
Gasoline cars
In the 1891 the Daimler Motor Company, owned by William Steinway (owner of Steinway & Sons piano firm), began producing petrol engines for cars, carriages, and boats in Hartford, CT, US. In the 1893 Charles and Frank Duryea, built the first gasoline car installing a 4 HP, single cylinder gasoline engine on a horse drawn buggy.
Who invented the bicycle?
The first vehicle that was like what we call bicycle, was developed into the mid 1800s by a Kirkpatrick MacMillan (Scotland), in the later mid 1800s Ernest Michaux and Pierre Lallement (France) attached pedals to large wheel. In the 1870s James Starley made some changes increasing the front wheel size, and placing the rider over the pedals. In the 1890s bicycles were equipped with brakes and pneumatic tires developed by John Dunlop. Bicycling became popular and the bicycle was the main mode of transportation for most people till 1910 when cars took place of bicycles. In many countris of the world the bicycle remains the most important means of transportation, and rich country are looking at the past re introducing bikes as city vehicle, because of traffic and pollution given by cars.
